Broadway.Com – At Glee Concert, Lea Says “Hello” To Jonathan Groff

May 25, 2010

If you’re a Glee fan, the Gibson Amphitheater in Los Angeles was the place to be on May 22. That night, the audience at the newly launched Glee concert tour was treated to a special surprise guest: Jonathan Groff! After playing the recurring role of rival high school singing star Jesse St. James on the show, Groff joined his real-life best friend Lea Michele on stage for an impromptu duet of “Hello,” the first song they ever sang together on the hit TV show. Click on and take a listen to the song (and the screams of thousands of excited Gleeks). Doesn’t it take you back to Jonathan and Lea’s Spring Awakening days, just a little bit? Aww, come back to Broadway soon, guys!

I absolutely adore the two of them as friends. They are so cute.

Groff happily dropped into ‘hurricane’ that is Glee

May 21, 2010

According to Jonathan Groff, fans of TV’s Glee seem “OK” with his character Jesse St. James, a hated Glee club rival and romantic interloper.

“I haven’t been spit on yet,” laughs Groff. “And I got to say — I don’t see Jesse as a bad guy. I think maybe Rachel (Lea Michele) has found a match in Jesse. But that’s just me.”

Of course, it helps that Groff’s on-screen paramour is also his long time best friend. Groff and Michele worked the Broadway stage together years ago in a production of Spring Awakening.

“It was my first big break. And to be working with my best friend now doesn’t seem like work at all.”

It wasn’t a complete coincidence that they would end up on the same TV show. It was Groff who first introduced Michele to Glee creator Ryan Murphy. And when Murphy first mentioned he was working on a new show called Glee, he already had Groff in mind for a part.

Problem was Groff was initially tied up with another series pilot. But when that failed to catch on, Glee beckoned.

“A role was written specifically for me for the back nine episodes,” says Groff, whose late arrival has given him a unique perspective on the series’ rapid, overwhelming success.

“I saw Glee explode from my TV at home. Then I got dropped into the hurricane.”

So far, Groff counts his duet with Michele on Lionel Richie’s Hello as a show favorite. And his toughest musical moment? AC/DC’s Highway To Hell.

“I’m a singer before a dancer. Dancing is something that that doesn’t ever come easily.”

As for Jesse St. James’ future on the series, it’s up in the air. Though Glee was renewed for another season a long time ago (and was recently awarded the coveted time slot after next year’s Super Bowl), Groff isn’t sure what his role might be.

“Details for my involvement haven’t been worked out yet,” he says. “But I’d love to see Rachel and Jesse end up together.”

Glee airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on Global.

Groff “Blown Away” By Support Over Newsweek Article

May 20, 2010

Gay actor JONATHAN GROFF has thanked his fans and peers for their loyalty following a Newsweek article which slammed him for playing straight roles, insisting he is “totally blown away” by their support.

The Glee star was branded a “theater queen” by popular columnist Ramin Setoodeh in a recent copy of the publication, with the writer also targeting Broadway actor Sean Hayes in the piece.

A string of celebrities, including Kristin Chenoweth, Glee creator Ryan Murphy and Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, spoke out to defend Groff and Hayes, slamming editors of Newsweek for allowing the article to be published.

And now Groff has spoken out about the scandal, telling BBC’s Newsbeat, “I do totally appreciate all of the support and love that has been shown from all of these people that are speaking up in support of actors of all shapes and sizes and sexualities playing all different roles because we’re actors.

“I’m totally blown away and love all of the support and love that has been shown.”

What’s Glee’s Jesse St. James Really Up To? Jonathan Groff Teases His “Surprising” Storyline

May 4, 2010

It’s not exactly breaking news that the adorable Jonathan Groff is a fantastic addition to Glee’s second half of the season. Ever since he peeped over that music sheet, we were his. But we can’t help but feel like something…isn’t….right with his character, Jesse St. James.

“He’s certainly up to something, that’s for sure,” Jonathan tells us mysteriously. Is Jesse really a spy for rival glee club Vocal Adrenaline, or is he sniffing around the New Directions for some other reason? Here’s what we know…

“My reasons for being at the high school are surprising. I was surprised,” Jon tells us when asked what’s ahead. “He has some surprises up his sleeves, none that I can reveal right now.” So, the word of the day is surprise. Got that, kids? There will be a quiz later. As for the essay portion of this test, what are some potentially surprising turns of events for Jesse?

How about a differential diagnosis, à la House? We know Jesse beelined for Rachel (Lea Michele) from the get-go. We know the director of Vocal Adrenaline, Shelby Corcoran (Idina Menzel), is in on whatever’s happening between Jesse and Rachel. And we have been speculating that Shelby is in fact Rachel’s mother. So…perhaps Jesse is part of the ploy to bring Shelby closer to her daughter? Gasp, could it be?! Well, one thing’s for sure: Jonathan Groff has brought more dreaminess and choir comedy to an already stellar ensemble. And, big shocker here, he was welcomed with open arms by the cast.

“The great thing about Glee, truly and honestly, is that everyone in the cast is incredibly grounded, incredibly humble, incredibly hardworking and really nice and open,” Jon gushes. “They’re very, very welcoming. Arms wide open, accepting and embracing.” With that face and head of hair, we can’t say we’re at all surprised (word of the day!) that the cast was so eager to have him on board. Although it hasn’t been all sunshine onset.

“It’s grueling. It was a crazy dance number,” he says when talking about his final day of filming. “I have a cut on my arm from some gal’s heel. Some guy got a concussion, a girl twisted her ankle, and one girl broke her finger and had a cast on for the whole number.” Holy hell, what kind of circus is Ryan Murphy running over there? “It’s crazy, it’s intense, it’s Glee,” reasons Jonathan.

Speaking of things that are both crazy and awesome: Britney Spears. Her team has been campaigning for a tribute episode to the pop princess, and the cast is totally on board. Jon admits he “loves” the singer and even suggested the Glee gang remake this B.Spears staple. Um, that needs to happen. We can already see Brittany and Santana in schoolgirl outfits and pigtails, thus making dreams come true for every man who watches the show (both voluntarily or by girlfriend’s request).

Well, Jonathan has made our Glee dreams come true. We only wish Jesse wasn’t a senior so he could come back for more next season. Can’t he flunk biology or something and have to stay another year? No? Then we will mourn his graduation. Until then, we will make sure #TheGroff trends on Twitter. Plus. you can do your part by making the most of this marvelous man every Tuesday night at 9 p.m. of Fox.
