Since Jonathan’s casting news for The Submission yesterday, I guess this is a popular question in everyone’s minds.
Luca in New York, N.Y.: Please tell me you have intel on whether or not his Groffiness Jonathan Groff will be appearing on Glee next season!
We have some not so good news, at least for Glee fans. Jonathan was just cast in an off-Broadway show (The Submission), and it runs pretty much the whole time Glee is in production for the first half of season three. Our resident Broadway expert predicts Groff will be up to his ears in stage duties from August until the end of October. Unless Jonathan flies back and forth on his one day off while performing, Jesse St. James will most likely be MIA for the first part of next season. But who knows, The Groff may not like to sleep, so maybe he’ll do both! Fun fact about his new show, True Blood’s Rutina Wesley is also starring in it.
What Watch With Kristin forgot to mention is that last year Jonathan was doing Deathtrap which had a longer run compared to The Submission. Deathtrap ended in January and was in London whereas The Submission ends in October and is in New York. So Jonathan returning for this season is higher and we could get him in more episodes compared to Season 2 but it all really comes down to Ryan Murphy and Glee co again on whether on not they will have Jonathan back for Season 3.Tweet
Looks like Jonathan has been cast in the new off broadway play, The Submission:
The actors Jonathan Groff and Rutina Wesley have played characters in emotionally charged tight spots before, he in Broadway’s “Spring Awakening” (and in diva showdowns on Fox’s “Glee”) and she on HBO’s “True Blood” as Sookie’s troubled friend Tara. This fall the two will find themselves together in a pickle of their own making in the new Off Broadway play “The Submission,” which MCC Theater is producing at the Lucille Lortel Theater.
In the play, Jeff Talbott’s debut work, Mr. Groff will play Danny Larsen, an aspiring playwright with a new drama about an alcoholic black mother, which he has written under the nom de plume Shaleeha G’ntamobi. Details about Ms. Wesley’s role remain under wraps, though her character becomes caught up in Danny’s subterfuge. Joining them in the cast are Eddie Kaye Thomas (Off Broadway’s “Bachelorette,” the “American Pie” movies) as the boyfriend of Mr. Groff’s character, and Will Rogers (“When the Rain Stops Falling”) as a friend of Danny.
The production, to be directed by the Tony Award winner Walter Bobbie (“Venus in Fur,” “Chicago”), is to begin preview performances on Sept. 8 and open on Sept. 26, with a scheduled run through Oct. 22. “The Submission” will be the first major New York production in two years for Mr. Groff, a Tony nominee for “Spring Awakening,” whose last role was as Dionysus in the Public Theater’s production of “The Bacchae” in Central Park in August 2009. Since then he has appeared on “Glee” as the star singer of a rival high school glee club, and in London starring opposite Simon Russell Beale in the 2010 revival of “Deathtrap.”
Glee: Ryan Murphy was serious about that guest star ban on season three, and praise Groff for that. Wait, Jonathan Groff is a guest star. Hold on, we’re gonna get Ryan on the phone. Meanwhile, Kristin Chenoweth tells Zap2it that it’s “a bummer” that April Rhodes won’t be back next season. “But he needs to get his show back, so I get why he’s doing that,” she says.
If you want Jonathan to return to Season 3 as series regular like we do, sign the petition: Make Jonathan Groff A Glee Season 3 Regular! . Hopefully, we find out soon about Jonathan’s status with Glee.
